Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.33 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.33 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 1 bag (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 7 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 1 6-quart slow cooker

Method

  1. In a 6-quart slow cooker, whisk 1 cup milk with the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until smooth.
  2. Whisk in the remaining 7 cups milk and the heavy cream.
  3. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours or HIGH for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring every 30 minutes, until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is steaming hot.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Serve hot.

Notes

For the smoothest drink, whisk the cocoa mixture until no lumps remain before adding the rest of the milk. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days; freezing is possible, though the texture may change when thawed. For a dairy-free variation, use dairy-free milk, cream, and chocolate chips.
